Morpeth Town Juniors 4 Westerhope Juniors 2
Morpeth kicked off their 2008-09 season with a comfortable win against league newcomers Westerhope. The scoreline could and perhaps should have been more convincing, but credit must be given to the Westerhope keeper who made a number of good saves.
Whilst Westerhope are a new team and had a few players missing on holiday, the nucleus of their side was drawn from former Ponteland players; a team that played in division 3 last season. It was clear they had one or two useful players, but Morpeth played very well in spells and were deserving of their victory.
Morpeth started on the offensive but were unable to make an early breakthrough whilst Westerhope threatened from time to time. Early chances were few (although Wilson came close to converting an opportunity), but Morpeth were playing some decent football. One move involved 6 players exchanging passes, starting with Whittle in the left back position and ending with Brown having a strike on goal.
Morpeth held the sway and the breakthrough came via a familiar source. Hughes broke clear in the inside right position and angled a low drive past the keeper for a fine goal. He nearly added a second moments later when in an almighty scramble, Hughes was unable to turn the ball over the line with the post and a posse of players all involved. It looked like Morpeth were going for a pushover try!
The lead didn't last more than a few minutes when Westerhope equalised via a fine long range strike. It came out of the blue and the dipping shot gave Taylor no chance as it found the bottom corner.
As half time approached, it looked like Morpeth would be level at the break, but in the last minute they snatched the lead. A Morpeth corner was floated across by Bryson and Rolt (playing the first half in an unfamiliar centre back role), planted a header past the keeper for a fine goal.
Numerous changes were made at half time and it showed early in the second period as Morpeth struggled to settle. Westerhope capitalised when a striker took advantage of hesitancy in Morpeth defence and poked a shot over Taylor and into the net for an equaliser.
That sparked Morpeth into action and for the remainder of the half, Morpeth could have scored a number of goals. In the end, they had to settle for two, the first following a flowing move. Tomlin was released on the left of the area and he beat the keeper at his near post.
Chances were coming. A swift break involving Hughes and Moore saw the latter pull back for Barwick, but the shot was scuffed. Another almighty scramble and again the ball somehow didn't cross the line, Creighton came close to turning in a ball after the keeper blocked an effort, whilst Moore's rising drive hit the bar, bounced down on the line, hit the bar again before coming back out. Linesman Wilson was unmoved despite claims for a goal!
Rolt, pushed back up front, was playing well and had opportunities whilst Hughes was always a threat, time and again denied by the Westerhope keeper. However, he grabbed his second goal when a fine rising drive from 12 yards flew into the net 10 minutes from time.
Westerhope had further chances, Wilson cleared one effort off the line whilst a striker volleyed over from 6 yards, but Morpeth repeatedly threatened on the break as the game drew to a close, Aldridge being prominent with some astute midfield passing.
So, a good work out with some promising play from Morpeth ahead of another friendly this Saturday which may prove a sterner test.
TEAM : Taylor, Dickinson, Whittle, Wilson, Rolt, Haxell, Moore, Barwick, Brown, Hughes, Bryson. SUBS : Aldridge, Smith, Tomlin, Kelly, Creighton, Thompson.
